Bern's Steak House, Tampa
Affectionately called “Hab” by everyone at Bern’s, Habteab Hamde emigrated from the small African country of Eritrea in 1983. Growing up he enjoyed preparing meals for his family and because of his talent everyone predicted he would one day become a chef. He eventually followed his passion and attended the Swedish Culinary Institute in Sudan, Africa. Later on, he settled in the United States and left his culinary career behind and began attending the University of South Florida to pursue a degree in accounting, but his dreams of being in the kitchen never wavered and he found himself in his element once again.
Chef Hab enjoys cooking because it is so similar to chemistry – especially creating new things with his favorite ingredients, garlic, tomato and onion. He says, “It is truly exciting to take different ingredients, textures and flavors and create something completely new and different and at Bern’s we have so many opportunities to utilize some of the best products in the world.” His warmth emulates the kitchen, as he manages a staff of over 100.
Hamde has been featured in numerous publications and on television including Dupont Registry, The Travel Channel, Food Network, The Cooking Channel, Emeril’s Florida, Bay News 9, ABC World News Tonight, and The Today Show among others. Bern’s Steak House was named an Outstanding Wine Program finalist in 2015, and an Outstanding Restaurant Semifinalist in 2014, by the James Beard Foundation, in addition to countless accolades and Top 100 lists. Chef Hab is responsible for creating some of Bern’s most coveted dishes and continues to inspire and delight customers from around the globe.
