Foundation Grants Over $125,000 To New Orleans Community Projects

Emeril Lagasse and the board of directors of Emeril Lagasse Foundation (ELF) are proud to announce the beneficiaries of its spring 2014 grant awards. Four New Orleans-based organizations were selected among very competitive and creative applicants. A total of $125,000 was distributed by the Foundation. The non-profit organizations receiving funding are providing young people with life skills development, culinary training and healthy meals.

“My wife Alden and I are thrilled to continue our support of these incredible, New Orleans -based organizations,” said Chef Emeril Lagasse.  “We’re very proud of what we have accomplished together over the last 11 years by supporting children’s programs like these. These most recent round of grants are a testament of our ongoing commitment to impacting kids’ lives in our community.”

Emeril Lagasse Foundation will continue its support of non-profit programs which provide education and services to children who need it most. This summer, Second Harvest Food Bank will utilize funds provided by ELF to provide 4,000 low-income children enrolled in summer camps with a free breakfast, lunch and snack each day at 65 sites in the area. Additionally through this grant, the food bank will expand the Kids Café program to bring nourishment when the school day ends.  Over the course of 36 weeks in the 2014-15 year, Kids Café will bring 200,000 hot dinner meals to after-school sites in over 25 individual neighborhoods and communities. This marks the fifth year that ELF has supported summer meals, for a total investment of $150,000 since 2010.

Furthering the Foundation’s work to create opportunity for at-risk young adults, ELF will grant funds to two New Orleans hospitality job training programs. Longtime beneficiary Café Reconcile, and the four-year old Café Hope, share similar missions to teach life skills and employability through both classroom time and internships in their working restaurants. The students receive job placement upon graduation along with case managers to continue advising throughout their first jobs.

New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) has garnered the support of ELF once again to provide necessary uniforms and equipment for aspiring chefs in the high school culinary program who would otherwise not be able to purchase them for the 2014-15 year.  NOCCA is home to the Emeril Lagasse Foundation Culinary Arts Studio, which opened in 2011.
